The Little Bird (& other metamorphosis dreams)
DREAM: THE LITTLE BIRD
The video above illustrates a condensed version of this dream. Here is the entire dream:
I dreamt I was outside somewhere, and I saw a bird flying overhead. It was a big white bird (larger than a seagull, with a big wing span). I noticed the bird looked really raggedy and ill. It had a lot of missing feathers. So much so that, as it flew overhead, you could see blue sky through gaps and holes in its feathers. I thought, “Oh man, that bird’s in really bad shape.”
As I was watching it a clump of feathers came off and floated down towards me. Then I realized it was another bird, like a baby bird. I instinctively held out my arm, and it landed on my arm.
It was so beautiful. It was the size of maybe a cockatiel. Its body was white, but on its head and shoulders it had peachy-pinky iridescent feathers. It said a single word – I think it was “Momma”. It sounded like a word when it cawed. I started stroking the bird. I wondered if that was a good idea, because I was getting a human scent on it and it might be rejected by its mother. But I figured it was already orphaned because the big bird was in such bad shape.
A female friend was with me. She said “What is that?” I knew I wanted to keep the bird. I felt responsible for it. At the same time, I wondered if we should call some bird experts because I thought it might be a rare species or even a new species. It seemed magical. But I didn’t want the bird to be confiscated, caged, and run through a bunch of tests. The bird felt very real to me in this dream.
INTERPRETATION
This is a metamorphosis dream.
The large bird with holes in her feathers represents the dreamer’s old self and past trauma. This old bird gives birth to a new, “magical” bird. The dreamer had been through therapy, and this dream came as the therapy was reaching its conclusion. It’s a lovely validation of the healing that’s taken place.
The peachy-pink feathers on the little bird represents a gift of spiritual counseling. So the dreamer is to use this gift in this new, next phase of her life, as represented by the baby bird.
In the dream, the dreamer shows a willingness to embrace and commit to this new transformed self.
METAMORPHOSIS DREAMS can come in a thousand different forms—a cocoon, the splitting of your skin, waking up as a different person…. There are countless ways and symbols.
This type of dream can come during major life changes such as graduating school, ending (or starting) a significant relationship, a new child, a new career, or doing significant work on yourself through therapy or other healing modalities. It’s almost always a very positive sign!
